Reducing Fouling in Reverse Osmosis Plant

A desalination plant in Saudi Arabia reduced membrane fouling and operating costs by installing Merus Rings in their reverse osmosis systems.

El reto

A high concentration of foreign substances (Total Dissolved Solids [TDS]) in the well water results in problems at the membranes of the RO. Minerals became trapped in membranes, blocked pre-filters, and caused fouling. Pressure required at membranes increased daily while production capacity declined. Every three months the RO membranes needed to be exchanged. Pre-filters required weekly replacement. Chemical additives slowed but did not stop fouling.

La solución Merus

Merus Rings were installed on the reverse osmosis systems to prevent mineral buildup and membrane fouling.

Production volume stabilized immediately after installation. No fouling observed one year after installation. Membrane replacement reduced to once annually (from every three months). Pre-filter lifespan extended significantly. Chemical additives eliminated. Investment amortized within two months. Energy savings achieved as pumps no longer required full power. Stable production with no downtime from membrane exchanges.
