Barnacles / Biofouling in the main Sea Water Inlet

On Royal Boskalis Westminster's dredger MV Waterway (Netherlands), barnacles and mussels fouled the sea water inlet yearly. A 55 cm Merus Ring left the pipe clear after 12 months.

El reto

Sea organisms like barnacles and mussels enter the ship's sea water system through the sea chest. Larvae pass the filters and grow in the pipes, causing biofouling that blocks water inlets. The issue intensifies in coastal and harbor waters with warmer temperatures. Pipes require cleaning annually, which demands specialized divers or dry dock operations.

La solución Merus

Installation of a Merus Ring upstream, near the water intake opening, to prevent biofouling in the main sea water inlet system.

After 12 months, the pipe is clear. Only few barnacles remained and could be removed easily, compared to the difficult removal process on untreated pipes. The risk of blocking was reduced and the cleaning cycle was considerably extended.
