Softening turns hard water into soft water, traditionally by ion exchange that swaps calcium for sodium. The Merus Ring is an environmentally friendlier alternative that needs no salt and no power.
A Merus Ring is not a water softener
A modern ion exchanger uses about 50 grams of regenerating salt per degree of hardness and produces roughly two litres of waste water each cycle. At 20 degrees of hardness that is around 1 kg of salt and 40 litres of water per cubic metre. For a four person household in Germany, where one person uses about 150 litres a day, that adds up to roughly 220 cubic metres of water a year and about 250 kg of salt.
Soft water without salt
Some industrial processes genuinely need fully demineralised water, but most households do not. Merus changes the surface tension of the water to give a softer feel without changing its chemical composition. There is no electricity use, no regenerating salt, no operating cost and no regular maintenance. Where lime deposits still appear they wipe away easily, instead of forming the hard crusts left behind by an untreated system.
