Struvite precipitation in wastewater

At the wastewater plant in Kranj, Slovenia, struvite clogged heat exchangers and pipes. A 5 inch Merus Ring ended pipe replacement, leaving only effortless periodic cleaning.

Zorluk

Struvite precipitation (ammonium magnesium phosphate, formula NH4MgPO4.6H2O) accumulates in heat exchangers and pipes during wastewater treatment. The buildup causes two issues: difficulty maintaining target temperatures, leading to higher energy consumption and reduced methane extraction efficiency; and pipe diameter reduction, limiting wastewater flow and requiring frequent cleaning or equipment replacement. Kranj has 40,000 citizens and is Slovenia's third-largest city. The treatment plant uses stainless steel pipes and heats sludge to 37 C to extract methane for electricity generation.
