Water in sufficient quantity and quality is the basic prerequisite for sustainable farming, whether you grow plants, raise livestock or farm fish. Only good water lets you use the full potential of your natural resources.
Irrigation and soils
Where rain is scarce the land is irrigated, and at the Nile groundwater is already tapped up to 150 km inland. The WHO recommends using water below 800 TDS for irrigation, because over time salts build up and soils turn snow white, where crops can no longer grow. Livestock and aquaculture
Animals benefit too. Farm animals that drink quality water need less concentrated feed, additives dissolve better so fewer are needed, and coliform bacteria in waste water drop. In fish farming the density of stock spreads disease quickly, and treated water means salmon carry fewer lice and there is more dissolved oxygen in the water.
