Wherever water cools engines, processes or air conditioning, a good cooling water treatment keeps every part of the loop working together. Over the last years this has become one of our core competencies.
Open and closed cooling systems
Open systems are exposed to the atmosphere through one or a row of cooling towers, and include once through cooling with sea, river or bore well water. In a closed system the water circulates for a long time without contact to ambient air, cooled by air coolers or chillers. As water evaporates, the minerals stay behind and concentrate until they settle as limescale, feed corrosion and clog pumps and pipes.
One ring instead of a cabinet of chemicals
Almost every cooling system faces the same problems at once: corrosion, fouling, scaling, deposits and microbiological growth that turns into biofilm and algae. Traditionally each needs its own chemical. We have seen systems dosing a cocktail of six different chemicals. Merus addresses all of these in a single ring, almost independent of water or ambient temperature.
How we treat a cooling loop
In smaller systems we place one ring on the return line at the cooling tower riser and one on the make up water. Over time the treatment flushes deposits out and little or no cleaning is needed. In large loops with kilometres of pipe feeding hundreds of heat exchangers, we install rings at strategic points after discussing your process and blow down cycles, and back it with a service agreement and ongoing monitoring.
