Pitting Corrosion Boiler Tubing

Heating Plant Sabac in Serbia suffered oxygen pitting corrosion on three boilers. After one heating season a 2 inch Merus Ring HCI left a protective magnetite film and no yellow coatings.

The challenge

The Serbian Heating Plant Sabac experienced pitting corrosion on three large boilers. Yellow coatings on the tube surfaces indicated oxygen corrosion creating craters, causing pipe deterioration and requiring frequent costly replacements.

The Merus solution

Installation of a Merus Ring on the supply line of boiler number 1 as a trial to prevent limescale, corrosion, and oxygen/pitting corrosion.

After one heating season, comparison showed no more yellow coatings on the treated boiler surfaces. The pipes developed a black film of magnetite, which acts as an anti-corrosion agent. Boilers 2 and 3 without treatment showed unchanged deterioration. The facility determined the ring was as effective as claimed and decided to purchase Merus rings for all three boilers.
